Today’s top book news item:

Brian Floca’s Locomotive wins the Caldecott Medal for children’s book artistry. It’s the story of an 1869 railroad journey that includes everything from sketches of the crew to the “smoke and cinders, ash and sweat” of the coal engine.

Also, Kate DiCamillo’s Flora & Ulysses — about a girl who befriends a poetry-writing flying squirrel — takes home the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished children’s book of 2013.
